What causes a tooth infection or abscess to develop?
Tooth infection is typically caused by harmful bacteria that has begun to invade the dental pulp. As the infection progresses, the bacteria travels down the inside of the nerve canal towards the tip of the root, thus resulting in an abscess. The presence of an abscess indicates a serious tooth infection. An abscess is your bodies way of trying to localize and wall off the bacteria. This helps prevent the infection from spreading to adjacent structures. It’s important to get this treated as soon as possible as the spread of bacteria into your blood can lead to a variety of systemic issues. Depending on the severity of the infection we will either administer antibiotics or begin same day treatment. Make sure to contact us as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
